My name is Barbara Britton-Williams. I am a wife, daughter, sister, mother, and friend to many. My civic organization has helped me to see the need in my local community - that we have neighbors who need food.
So, here’s how it all started - In 2010, I was at Freedom Baptist Church one Sunday and I was reading a pamphlet about SHARE Foods, a local food supply program; I had never heard about it before. There were only 6 churches in Alexandria involved in the program, so I took this idea to the Pastor at my church, Mt. Jezreel Baptist in Alexandria, Virginia.
At the time, I had already been picking up extra bread from local grocery stores and distributing it to community members who could use it. But I thought to myself, “We need more food for the people.” So, I recruited some friends to volunteer, we partnered with a local food program to offer more food, and that’s how we began putting both bread and meals on the table for our neighbors in need.
